EVERY ONE

"Next Revolution" Policy Report (October 2009)

 Thirty years ago, Jim Grant, then head of UNICEF, spearheaded a surge of global action to save millions of children’s lives known as the 'child survival and development revolution'. Today, much remains to be done. This report, which coincides with the global launch of our EVERY ONE campaign, examines why child mortality rates in the developing world are so high and what must be done to reduce these rates.

UN Convention on the Rights of the Child The Convention on the Rights of the Child is the first legally binding international instrument to incorporate the full range of human rights-civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights. In 1989, world leaders decided that children needed a special convention to ensure their special care and protection.

Large Roads - The EU, the Millenium Development Goals and Children Achievement of the Millenium Development Goals is crucial to improving the lives of children in the developing world. Over 600 million children world-wide live in absolute poverty - an estimated one in four. In this report, Save the Children considers how the European Commission is contributing in its policies, programmes and actions relating to the MDG goals and targets relevant for children. We make recommendations on ways in which the EC could maximise its contribution to the achievement of child-focused MDGs.

Education

Language and Education: The Missing Link - How the Language Used in Threatens the Achievement of Education for all (2009)

This report from Save the Children and CFBT shows the scale of damage caused by preventing children from learning in their first language. The risks of not taking action are greatest in multilingual countries affected by poverty, conflict and instability.

The Child-Centred Framework for Delivering Education Programs that Work

Our framework considers the rights of the child with respect to educational programming, and puts forth an approach that is both integrated and collaborative.

Forgotten Girls, Casualties of War (2005)
This report shows how girls are being overlooked in current efforts to release children from armed groups and support their return home. There are approximately 120,000 girls associated with armed groups across the world. It challenges existing systems and argues that the international community must fund programs designed to meet girls' needs.

Rewrite the Future: The Campaign
Education saves lives. It gives children the skills they need to escape poverty, live healthily and have hope for the future. The right to go to school belongs to every child. Save the Children launched a global initiative to bring education to children living in countries of armed conflict.

State of the World's Mothers Report 2006: Saving the Lives of Mothers and Newborns 

Mother and newborn, it is life's most basic partnership. Every year, 60 million women give birth at home with no skilled care. More than 500,000 women died from complications of pregnancy and childbirth, 4 million newborn babies die every year before they are a month old, and 3 million are stillborn.

Global UN Study presented to General Assembly in October 2006. Includes findings and recommendations from across the globe. Save the Children directly involved in the children consultations.

Will You Listen ? Children and Armed Conflict Survey Report 2007
Ten years after the UN Study by Graca Machel on children living with armed conflict, over 1700 children were surveyed to hear their experiences with conflict.

 

Child Protection

Safe You Safe Me (2006)
This book with child-friendly drawings teaches children how to protect themselves and speak out against abuse. This book was published in conjunction with the UN Study on Violence Against Children and was coordinated by Save the Children Sweden in 2006.

Are African Children the New Human Capital for Trade and Development? (2002) 

African children (one of three African children) between the ages of five to 14 are economically active in the agricultural, manufacturing, extractive and /or domestic sectors, producing goods and service consumed domestically and internationally.

This New Partnership for Africa's Development is a pledge by African leaders, based on a common vision and a firm and shared conviction, that they have a pressing duty to eradicate poverty and to participate actively in the world economy and body politic. The Programme is anchored on the determination of Africans to extricate themselves and the continent from the malaise of underdevelopment and exclusion in a globalising world.

Food Security Responses in Africa
Children are the most vulnerable to the risks of food insecurity and malnutrition. With many countries in Africa having over half of their population under the age of 18, it is vital that food aid is targeted to children and that activities to promote livelihoods seek to protect children. Five Years Later, Rebuilding Lives after the Tsunami: The Children's Road to Recovery (2009)

Five years have passed since the devastating South Asia tsunami of December 26, 2004 — an emergency that triggered the largest disaster response in Save the Children’s history. While the world’s focus has largely moved on, Save the Children has continued to assist hundreds of thousands of children and family members in more than 1,000 villages in five countries: Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and Somalia.This report summarizes the progress we have made and the lives we have changed as a result of our planned five-year response and recover program.

In the Face of Disaster: Children and Climate Change Report (2008)

This report explores the devastating effects of climate change. The report specifically discusses the connection between climate change and increases in natural disasters, the impact that these natural disasters will have on children, and how organizations, communities, and governments can better prepare themselves for disasters. 

"Reducing Risks, Saving Lives" Disaster Risk Reduction Flyer (2009)

A detailed flyer that discusses what Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is and the approach that Save the Children has taken to implementing it.

Child Friendly Spaces- Handbook (October 2008) Child Friendly Spaces, one of Save the Children’s emergency interventions, provide children with protected environments in which they participate in organized activities to play, socialize, learn, and express themselves as they rebuild their lives. This handbook will guide Save the Children emergency response personnel and implementing partners in the rapid implementation of effective Child Friendly Spaces for children during and immediately after an emergency such as a natural disaster or situation of armed conflict.

Child Protection in Emergencies- Position Paper (2007) 

Since its inception in 1919, the International Save the Children Alliance (or Save the Children) has worked with children in emergency situations. This document details both Save the Children’s current perspective on the main protection dangers that children face in an emergency and how to address them.

 Your Story is Important... (2009)

Promotional material aimed at getting people to tell their unique stories. The material is specifically geared towards people who live in areas where Save the Children has provided assistance or to people who have been specifically assisted by Save the Children.

 Report: Feeling the Heat (2009) 

Climate change presents many risks and threats to children from especially poor families. This report reminds us of the close connection between climate change and the other challenges facing poor children, such as poverty and rapid urbanization.

 

Protecting Children in Emergencies
Since 1990, over 2 million children have died as a direct result of armed conflict. At least 6 million children have been permanently disabled or seriously injured, and more than one million have been orphaned or separated from their families. Emergencies must contain a large component for child protection, states Save the Children.

A Sense of Belonging - Case studies in positive care options for children
A Sense of Belonging explores different types of care that work for children. Drawn from a number of countries around the world, the case studies illustrate alternatives to institutional care.

Promoting psychosocial wellbeing among children affected by armed conflict and displacement; Report(1996) An overview of Save the Children's principles for, and approaches to, psychosocial programming for children living in countries at war or in post-conflict recovery.
