Journey of Hope: supporting children’s mental health

In the small and vibrant community of Constance Lake First Nation, mental health support worker, Alysha Wesley, works with children and youth through the Journey of Hope program. “We build on the knowledge they already have, because children are resilient and a lot of them come with their own coping skills. We just do our best to build on what they already have and what’s already around them,” she explains.

Journey of Hope provides mental wellness and psychosocial support and is delivered by local community partners of the National Reconciliation Program (NRP) at Save the Children. It leverages local knowledge, strengthens healthy coping mechanisms, and helps build a sense of community to enhance children’s resilience to trauma.

As Alysha states, children in Constance Lake are resilient. With a bit of extra support through programs like Journey of Hope, they can continue to build on their innate strengths and feel more empowered to achieve their goals.
