Save the Children partners operating in the besieged Syrian enclave of Eastern Ghouta say the five-hour daily ceasefire proposed by the Russian President has collapsed on the first day. The charity has spoken to sources on the ground who say the 9am-2pm ceasefire on Tuesday was not respected, with reports of artillery and airstrikes in many areas including Harasta and Douma, which have led to several civilian casualties. One partner said they registered 32 airstrikes between 12pm and 2pm. Save the Children partners were forced to suspend aid distributions planned for this morning because of ongoing bombardment.

Save the Children issued a statement on Monday calling for urgent humanitarian aid to be allowed into Eastern Ghouta, adding that the Russian plan for a daily five-hour ceasefire is not enough to help the hundreds of thousands of civilians who remain trapped. There’s an urgent need for humanitarian aid and evacuations of people who require life-saving medical treatment.

Save the Children calls on UN Security Council members to demand that parties to the conflict fully comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2401 and implement a ceasefire without delay.
