We recognize that not all children’s rights are equally realized in Canada, and those most deprived of their rights are First Nations, Metis, and Inuit children. That’s why we are focusing our programs in Canada on reconciliation through a child-centred approach.
There is no Canada without reconciliation and inclusion. Here are some ways to work towards reconciliation in 2021:
- Make a commitment to learn about reconciliation, Indigenous rights, history and culture:
- Take a moment to find out more about Canada’s past with residential schools
- Read the final report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls
- Read a book about reconciliation in Canada, and join the conversation about #IndigenousReads.
- Explore First Nations cultural events and experiences across Canada
- Listen to CBC’s Finding Cleo podcast, which follows a Cree family’s search for their missing sister and attempts to uncover why she and her five siblings were taken into government care in the early 1970s.
- Find out whose land you’re on, and learn more about how to acknowledge it.
- Spread the word about Indigenous rights on social media and encourage your friends and family to join you. Example tweet: This year, I am standing up for Indigenous rights with @savechildrencan. Join me in building a reconciled Canada: http://bit.ly/35ukOpe
- Join Team Save and fundraise this year to support our work in Canada with Indigenous communities
