We live our values every day– Accountability, Ambition, Collaboration, Creativity and Integrity.  Gender Equality in Emergencies (GEiE) position will play a critical role supporting the implementation of Save the Children (SC) movement-wide gender equality (GE) system strengthening, as well as specific gender equality in emergencies work on behalf of SC Canada, to ensure that SC appropriately responds to humanitarian needs while protecting the rights of girls and boys. An important component of this role will be to help transform the way SC views the integration of gender equality (GE) in humanitarian settings, which necessarily includes the humanitarian mandate to prevent, mitigate and respond to SGBV.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

Drive high quality and effective humanitarian responses through support to the global Gender Equality Humanitarian Technical Working Group (GE HTWG), with three focus areas.

  • Integration of Gender Equality (including SGBV) into SCI operational protocols and systems in line with the GE HTWG workplan, for example Response Management procedures; Emergency Preparedness Plans (EPPs); Surge Platform policies and procedures and other relevant response-level HR protocols; and operational policy development which aligns with SC Commitments to the Global GBV Call to Action.
  • Capacity Building in close coordination with relevant global humanitarian working groups, supporting efforts to build capacity of SCI Country Office staff and partner staff.
  • Deployment and support for responses, through the SCI Surge Platform and as assigned by the GE HTWG, to assist emergency response teams to design and initiate emergency response programming which appropriately addresses GE considerations, including SGBV.

Advance GEiE (inclusive of SGBV) minimum standards and best practices to promote GE and the prevention, mitigation and response to SGBV, through:

  • Integration of GE (inclusive of SGBV) into SCI Program Development and Quality Assurance tools and systems.
  • Support engagement on GEiE with peer agencies and external Working Groups in Canada and internationally with a focus on strengthening strategic partnerships with similar minded organizations.
  • Support Save the Children Canada to engage with Government of Canada donor (Global Affairs Canada) around the operationalization of the Gender Response Humanitarian Policy and the GBV Call to Action.
  • Support SCI through the GE HTWG to integrate GE and GBV within the SCI Humanitarian Agendas for Change (CHS and Grand Bargain commitments).

Qualifications (include but are not limited to):

  • A minimum of 6-9 years’ demonstrated field experience managing or implementing gender responsive or gender transformative programmes in humanitarian contexts.
  • Travel – the Sr. Specialist GEiE will travel up to 30% of her/his time overall. The majority of this will be for engagement with SCI stakeholders (SCI, COs) and capacity building. It is expected deployment will occur 1 to 3 times per year, with a duration of 2 to 6 weeks on average. Candidates must be available and willing to travel to insecure and remote environments.
  • Experience in an advisory role, successfully designing gender responsive or gender transformative programmes.
  • Experience conducting gender-sensitive assessments and developing gender action plans, including conducting gender equality analysis and/or research on gender equality.
  • Knowledge of the following internationals tools: IASC GBV Guidelines; IASC Gender Handbook; GBV Coordination Handbook; WHO Ethical and Safety Recommendations for Researching, Documenting and Monitoring Sexual Violence in Emergencies; the global Essential Services Package for Women and Girls; and ideally, GBV Standard Operating Procedures; and GBV Information Management System.
  • Knowledge of humanitarian theory, practice and architecture, humanitarian risk assessment and planning and managing humanitarian responses;
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in capacity building, and designing and delivering training in multicounty contexts, with high intercultural sensitivity.
  • Adhere to Save the Children’s Child Safeguarding policy and protocols.
  • Police check vulnerable sector screening.
