Meet a champion for child’s rights: Doreen Rowe

Dedicated: that would be the perfect word to describe Doreen Rowe, a long-standing supporter of Save the Children. After her friend encouraged her to support in 1971, Doreen has dedicated her time, resources and heart to our work for children.

She worked in a Save the Children gift shop in downtown Vancouver where she sold one-of-a-kind items from across the world. All profits from the store went towards programming to ensure children worldwide could survive and thrive. Doreen even lent her knitting and crocheting skills by making beautiful baby sets that were also sold in the store. She later went on to collect stamps with her friends that were sold to a dealer to raise additional funds.

One of Doreen’s favourite ways to support is buying Gifts of Joy for her family and friends. She thinks a Gift of Joy is the perfect way to show love in the form of a gift to a child. It is a memorable gift for anyone special because it helps to transform the lives of children in Canada and around the world.

Doreen’s family always expects a Gift of Joy from her under the tree during the gift-giving season. Some of her favourite items to give are Stock a Medical Clinic, which includes life-saving supplies like stethoscopes, blood pressure monitors and thermometers; and Educate an Unaccompanied Child, which helps cover the cost of education for children who have lost their parents. She often uses the gifts of Chicks as stocking stuffers for her great-grandchildren! They are delighted to learn that these small animals can help to generate income and necessities for a child and their family.

When someone in her life passes away, Doreen gives a Gift of Joy instead of a sympathy card and flowers. This is a beautiful and heart-filled way to honour a legacy and show support in a time of sorrow.

Doreen’s long-standing support of Save the Children is proof that helping children around the world means so much to her. We appreciate Doreen and all of her efforts. She is a valuable member of our family of donors and a true champion of child’s rights!
